R4-RD Parking Mode Explained: Shutdown Delay, Motion Detection and Rebooting

Four views.
One parking story.

Front, rear and side views help you understand the activity around your parked vehicle.

The Rexing R4-RD provides front, rear, left and right recording to help document incidents around your parked vehicle. Its included OBD Smart Hardwire Kit allows the dash cam to switch automatically between normal driving recording and Parking Mode.

Parking Mode may not begin the moment you turn off the ignition. Understanding the transition—and how sensitive motion detection can be—will help you distinguish normal operation from a power, configuration or installation problem.

Looks like it never goes to sleep?

Review your parking footage. Is the camera recording continuously, or does it record when people or vehicles pass by? Sensitive motion detection can trigger frequent recordings, especially in busy locations.

Why doesn’t my R4-RD shut off immediately?

Your R4-RD may remain on for several minutes after the vehicle is turned off. Vehicle electronics and the OBD power adapter may take time to recognize the parked state and transition the camera into Parking Mode.

A short delay can be normal and does not necessarily indicate a problem with the camera or OBD adapter. The timing can vary by vehicle and its power-management behavior.

  • The camera may continue normal recording briefly after the ignition is turned off.
  • It then transitions into Parking Mode.
  • Motion or impact can trigger a parking recording while the system has power.

Parking standby and a complete power cutoff are different states. The system still needs power to monitor for activity; a low-voltage cutoff stops that power supply.

Sensitive motion detection can make the camera appear always on

The R4-RD’s built-in motion detection is highly sensitive. Passing vehicles, pedestrians and frequent movement around your parked vehicle can repeatedly trigger recording.

In a busy parking area, events can occur close together, and ongoing movement can keep recording active. This may look like the camera never entered sleep mode, even when Parking Mode is working.

The best check is your parking footage

Review the timestamps and footage from all four cameras. Look for whether recordings coincide with passing cars, people or other activity, and whether there are gaps during quiet periods.

Frequent activity can mean frequent recordings. Compare the footage and timestamps with what was happening nearby. A quiet period may have gaps; ongoing movement can make recording appear nearly continuous.AI-generated scene; not actual R4-RD footage. Recording behavior depends on conditions and settings.

Back-to-back recordings continue during an extended quiet period. Review all camera views and repeat the check in a less active location.

A trigger may be outside a camera’s view or have moved away before the clip begins. One clip without visible activity is not proof of a fault.

If footage consistently matches nearby activity, frequent motion detection is a likely explanation. If recording continues uninterrupted in a quiet location after the shutdown delay, contact support for help checking the settings and power connection.

Low-voltage protection: why Parking Mode can stop working

Frequent motion triggers mean more time recording and more power drawn from the vehicle battery while the engine is off. In a busy parking area, this can bring the battery voltage down to the OBD adapter's selected cutoff sooner than in a quiet location.

When low-voltage protection cuts the power supply, the camera shuts down to help protect the vehicle battery from further discharge.

NO POWER = NO PARKING RECORDING

Motion cannot wake a camera without power.

While the adapter is withholding power, passing people, vehicles or an impact cannot turn the camera on to record. Parking Mode remains unavailable even if it is enabled in the settings. This can be a protective shutdown, rather than a fault with motion detection.

Frequent motion → More recording and battery use
Battery reaches cutoff → Adapter cuts power
Camera stays off → Parking recording pauses

What to check if parking recordings stop

  • Review the last recordings. Frequent clips followed by no new recordings can be consistent with a cutoff, but are not proof on their own. Check the battery condition and power supply.
  • Restore adequate battery power. Follow the vehicle manufacturer's charging guidance. The camera can resume only once the adapter supplies power again; the exact restart conditions depend on the adapter.
  • Retest in a quieter location. Fewer unnecessary triggers may extend monitoring time. Available time also depends on battery charge, condition, temperature and the selected cutoff.

Keep battery protection in place. Do not bypass the cutoff or automatically select a lower voltage just to extend Parking Mode. If the camera remains off after normal power returns, or cuts off repeatedly, contact Rexing Support to check the battery and power setup.

Why does my R4-RD keep rebooting?

Repeated restarting can be related to the OBD kit’s low-voltage protection. A 12.4V setting protects the vehicle battery more conservatively, but voltage fluctuations near that threshold may cause power cycling.

If the adapter cuts power when voltage falls below the selected threshold, the camera shuts down. If the adapter subsequently restores power, the camera restarts. The exact restart behavior depends on the adapter.

Conceptual sequence: adapter cuts power, camera turns off, and the camera restarts if power later returns.
  1. Power cutoffThe adapter interrupts the power supply.
  2. Camera offMonitoring stops without power.
  3. If power returnsThe camera restarts; restoration logic depends on the adapter.
A restart can follow a change in power. This illustrates one possible cause of repeated rebooting. It does not specify the adapter’s exact cutoff or restart threshold.AI-generated conceptual illustration, not an R4-RD product image or a wiring diagram.
12.4V

More conservative protection
A drop to 12.3V may trigger a power cutoff. If power is restored afterward, the camera restarts.

11.6V

Allows deeper discharge
A drop to 12.3V remains above this cutoff. Lowering the setting allows the battery to discharge further.

Illustrative example for a 12V system. Actual behavior depends on the adapter’s cutoff and power-restoration logic.

Should I change the setting to 11.6V?

Do not automatically select the lowest setting to stop rebooting. A lower cutoff allows deeper battery discharge and may leave less starting reserve. Consider battery condition, driving frequency, temperature and the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance.

If the camera frequently reboots at 12.4V, have the battery and power setup checked, or contact Rexing Support for help choosing an appropriate setting.

How Parking Mode works

Engine off → Transition delay → Parking standby
Motion or impact → Recording
  • Motion Detection: The built-in sensor activates recording when movement is detected. Recording can continue while activity remains.
  • Gravity Sensing: A significant vibration or impact triggers an event recording and protects the file from ordinary loop-recording overwrite.

Frequent or ongoing movement can make parking recordings appear continuous. Use the footage and the surrounding conditions together to assess what is happening.

R4-RD Parking Mode setup checklist

  1. Use the compatible OBD Smart Hardwire Kit included with the R4-RD.
  2. Confirm that the camera’s power cable and OBD connection are secure.
  3. Configure Parking Monitor, Motion Detection and Gravity Sensing according to your unit’s manual.
  4. Turn off the engine and allow several minutes for the vehicle and adapter to transition.
  5. After a quiet period, walk around the vehicle to test motion detection.
  6. Review all camera views and timestamps. Compare the quiet period with the time you walked past.
  7. Check the battery condition, power supply and low-voltage protection setting if the camera repeatedly restarts, stays off or stops recording while parked.
  8. Save important footage before formatting the memory card, and check regularly for excessive locked files.

Important: Do not enable Parking Monitor without a compatible hardwire kit. If Parking Mode is not being used, the manual recommends setting Gravity Sensing to Low to reduce unnecessary locked recordings.
